There can be found beautiful and ancient churches in Hungary. A catholic wedding ceremony in Budapest can be be performed in a beautiful Church near your wedding party venue. Specific catholic requirements have to be met in order to have your catholic wedding ceremony in Hungary.

  • Couples need to apply for religious ceremony at parish office at least 6 months before (or earlier) the wedding date.
  • Provide a permission from your Parish Bishop and attend Pre-Cana classes as well as provide the necessary baptism and confirmation certificates.
  • If you have been divorced and the wedding was not officially annulled, you cannot marry in a catholic church.
  • Religious paperwork has to be issued within 6 months of the proposed wedding date, but not before otherwise it will expire.
  • You can have the civil ceremony at home before arriving in Hungary for religious ceremony.
  • The ceremony fee is varied by parish.

Protestant wedding ceremonies

In case of protestant wedding ceremony God’s will is presented and the Lordship of Jesus is proclaimed. The wedding guests are part of the service and they share hymns, readings and respond to the couple's exchange of vows. Protestant wedding ceremonies in Hungary can be held if spouses meet all the necessary requirements. Protestant ceremonies can be performed mainly in protestant churches and also in beautiful gardens, castles, and outdoor as well if Pastors travels there.

Jewish wedding ceremonies

Jewish Weddings can take place in a Synagogue or in one of our many beautiful locations. In Budapest you can find the larest Synagogue of Hungary and Europe. It is in the Dohány street. There are other Synagogues in different cities of Hungary as well: Szombathely, Zalaegerszeg, Makó, Baja, Veszprém, etc. The specific rules are the same as in your own country and your Rabbi will need to prepare the necessary religious documents to present to the hungarian Rabbi. Exact details and procedures will need to be discussed directly with the hungarian Rabbi.

Hindu wedding ceremonies


Hindu wedding ceremonies can be held in a temple next to mountains surrounded by forest and tranquillity close to Budapest or in gardens, castles, outdoor areas. The Hindu wedding is the most important ceremony in Hindu culture. Hindu wedding ceremonies may vary according to the local traditions of the different parts of India, they follow ancient rites and the marriage ritual can last three or more days.



This type of wedding is not legally binding and couples have the chance to personalize the ceremony as they require. The symbolic ceremony is the right choice for those couples who don’t want to worry about completing documents for a civil or religious ceremony or are already legally married. The ceremony can be performed by usher or leader of ceremony and you can include personal vows, favorite songs, poetry. The advantages of symbolic ceremonies are also that couples can celebrate in different special settings as romantic castles, parks, gardens, vinery.

This is a ceremony for those couples who are already married and want to renew their commitment to each other. The script of the ceremony is similar to a symbolic wedding ceremony. During this ceremony it is very important to reflect the history of the couple since they met and also include their hopes and dreams for their future. Some couples may want to include their original marriage vows enhancing them with their vision of the future life together.

Basic informations for civil weddings

Applying for the marriage license:

Both the bride and the groom must apply for the marriage license personally at the competent registry office. Competency is determined by the location of the wedding ceremony. In Budapest, there are registry offices by districts, so if you would like to have your ceremony in the 5th district, you need to apply for marriage in the registry office of the 5th district. The legal process takes around 3 months or more, so the application must be submitted minimum 3 months before your wedding. You don’t need to be resident during these months. You need to do just one visit which takes arond 1 hour. An interpreter is needed because the language of the procedure is Hungarian. The interpreter needn’t be a certified one, but he/she cannot be your family member. Interpreter can be your local wedding planner or a friend. The language of interpreting needn’t be your language, it can be English, if you understand English well.

Required Documents:

These can varies by your home country and marital status, but basically you will need the followings:

  • passport
  • birth certificates
  • Certificate of No Impediment (see in details below)
  • ID or document certifying your permanent address

Documents in special cases:

  • decree of divorce (if divorced)
  • official document certifying your widow status
  • official document about your name change (if you changed your name, which is indicated on your birth certificate)

Attested translation of documents:

The non-hungarian birth certificates and Certificate of No Impediment and the documents in special cases must be translated by the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd.


Both of you must be 18-year-old when applying for the marriage license.


For the official wedding ceremony in Hungary 2 witnesses are needed, 1 for the bide and 1 for the groom independently from their nationality. Foreigner also can be your witness. Their data and copy of their passports will be needed before the wedding.
